Bybit

Bybit is one of the largest derivatives exchanges in the world, with deep liquidity, competitive futures fees, and a mature product suite. It survived the biggest hack in crypto history in February 2025 without losing client funds, which paradoxically strengthened its safety case. Mandatory KYC and regional restrictions are the main trade-offs.

Bottom line

Bybit is a legitimate, high-liquidity exchange and generally safe for verified users. It fully reimbursed clients after the record $1.5B hack in February 2025 and publishes proof of reserves. However, KYC is mandatory for all features, and the exchange is unavailable in several regulated markets including the US.

✅ Pros

  • Deep derivatives liquidity, consistently among the top exchanges by futures volume
  • Competitive futures fees: 0.02% maker / 0.055% taker at the base tier
  • Covered 100% of client losses within 72 hours after the 2025 hack
  • Merkle-tree proof of reserves published regularly, with over 100% collateral on major assets
  • Full product suite: spot, perpetuals, options, copy trading, trading bots, earn
  • Fast KYC, with standard verification typically clearing within minutes

❌ Cons

  • KYC is mandatory for everything, including withdrawals; no anonymous tier since May 2023
  • The February 2025 hack, while fully covered, exposed weaknesses in cold-wallet signing workflow
  • Not available to users in the US, UK (retail derivatives), and several other jurisdictions
  • Spot maker fee (0.10% base) is higher than several rivals

Bybit launched in 2018 as a derivatives-first exchange and has grown into one of the two or three largest crypto trading venues in the world by futures volume. Headquartered in Dubai under founder and CEO Ben Zhou, it now offers spot markets, perpetual and dated futures, options, copy trading, bots, and a yield (“Earn”) suite. In 2025 it became the unwilling protagonist of the biggest theft in crypto history and, unusually for this industry, came out with its reputation arguably improved. This review covers what Bybit costs, how safe it actually is in 2026, and who should and shouldn’t use it.

Bybit at a Glance

Bybit’s core identity is a high-liquidity derivatives venue. Its BTC and ETH perpetual order books are consistently among the deepest available, which matters more than headline fees for anyone trading size: tighter spreads and less slippage often outweigh a basis point or two of commission. It’s the main reason Bybit stays in my own rotation for larger perp entries. The spot exchange, added later, has grown to 700+ advertised pairs as of 2026 and is competent rather than category-leading.

The platform is aimed squarely at active traders. The web terminal and mobile apps expose full order types (post-only, reduce-only, TP/SL brackets, iceberg via API), a unified trading account that cross-margins spot, perps, and options against one collateral pool, and a well-documented API used heavily by algorithmic traders. Beginners are served by copy trading and bots, but the interface density assumes some familiarity with leverage products.

Compared with rivals, Bybit sits between OKX, which has a similar pro-trader focus plus a bigger Web3 ecosystem, and retail-friendly platforms like BingX that lead with copy trading and looser onboarding. See our full exchange rankings for how they stack up side by side.

Security & Asset Protection

No honest Bybit review can skip February 21, 2025. Attackers, identified by the FBI as North Korea’s Lazarus Group, compromised a routine cold-to-warm wallet transfer, manipulating the signing interface so that Bybit’s own signers approved a malicious transaction. Roughly $1.5 billion in ETH and staked-ETH tokens was drained: the largest single theft in crypto history, larger than most traditional bank heists.

What happened next is why Bybit still rates highly on safety. Withdrawals were never halted. Within 72 hours the exchange closed the entire ETH gap through bridge loans, whale deposits, OTC purchases, and support from partners including Galaxy Digital, FalconX, and Wintermute; around $1.23 billion arrived within two days. Independent proof-of-reserves checks afterward showed BTC, ETH, SOL, USDT, and USDC balances above 100% collateralization. Bybit also launched the LazarusBounty program, offering up to 10% of recovered funds to on-chain investigators, and overhauled its multisig and signing infrastructure.

The uncomfortable takeaway: the attack proved Bybit’s operational security had a real weakness (the exploit ran through third-party wallet software and a compromised signing view), but its balance sheet and crisis handling were genuinely strong. In an industry where FTX-style holes are the nightmare scenario, getting hacked for $1.5B and making every user whole in three days is a stress test almost no exchange has passed at that scale.

Ongoing protections include Merkle-tree proof of reserves published regularly, cold storage for the majority of assets, withdrawal address whitelisting, anti-phishing codes, and mandatory 2FA for withdrawals. Bybit is not meaningfully regulated in top-tier jurisdictions, though. Its Dubai base (VARA licensing) and various regional registrations are not equivalent to US or EU oversight. As with any exchange, holding long-term funds in self-custody remains the sensible default.

KYC Policy & Limits

Bybit ended anonymous trading in May 2023. Every user must now complete at least standard identity verification before trading or withdrawing.

TierRequirementsUnlocksDaily withdrawal limit (as of 2026)
No KYCAccount creation, deposits onlyNo withdrawals
Standard (Lv. 1)Government ID + live selfieSpot, derivatives, copy trading, crypto withdrawalsUp to 1,000,000 USDT
Advanced (Lv. 2)Proof of addressFiat rails (SEPA/SWIFT), higher VIP benefitsUp to 2,000,000 USDT
VIP tiersVolume/asset thresholdsElevated limits by negotiationCustom

Standard verification typically clears within about 15 minutes. The 1M USDT daily limit at the basic tier is generous, and most retail users will never touch it, so the practical friction is simply that you cannot use Bybit anonymously at all. Residents of the US, mainland China, and a list of sanctioned or restricted territories cannot verify, and UK retail users are blocked from derivatives.

Fees Breakdown

Bybit uses a standard maker/taker model with VIP discounts based on 30-day volume or account assets. Base-tier rates as of 2026:

MarketMakerTaker
Spot0.10%0.10%
USDT/USDC perpetuals & futures0.02%0.055%
Options0.02%0.02% (capped as % of premium)

At the top VIP levels, futures fees fall to roughly 0.00% maker / 0.03% taker, and spot maker fees can reach zero. Funding payments on perpetuals settle every eight hours and flow between traders, not to the exchange. One piece of math worth internalizing before overtrading: derivatives fees apply to full notional position size, so at 50x leverage a 0.055% taker fee is effectively 2.75% of your margin per entry.

Deposits are free for crypto. Withdrawal fees are flat per-coin network fees (e.g., a fixed USDT fee that varies by chain; TRC-20 and cheaper L2s cost less than ERC-20). Fiat on-ramp costs depend on the channel: P2P is effectively spread-only, cards carry typical 2-3%-range processing costs from third-party providers.

Overall, futures pricing is competitive with OKX and cheaper than most retail-oriented venues. Base spot fees are mid-pack, and fee-conscious spot traders on other exchanges like MEXC will find lower headline rates elsewhere.

Leverage tiers step down as position size grows (risk-limit brackets), so quoted maximums apply only to smaller positions.

Copy trading is a major feature: users can allocate funds to ranked lead traders with transparent PnL histories, set per-trade caps, and stop copying at any time. Lead traders earn a share of follower profits. The pool of masters is large, though, as on every platform, past leaderboard performance is a poor predictor, and drawdowns on leveraged copy portfolios can be brutal. Bybit also offers grid bots, DCA bots, and futures martingale-style bots, plus a Launchpool/Earn suite for yield on idle balances.

Customer Support & App

Support runs 24/7 through live chat, email tickets, and an extensive help center. In practice, first-line chat responses arrive quickly but are template-heavy; escalations involving KYC reviews, risk-control freezes, or withdrawal flags can take days, which is consistent with complaints seen across all large exchanges. Support took a while to give me a straight answer when I asked about limit details once, which matches the template-first pattern. Community reviews cluster around two poles: smooth day-to-day experience, and frustration when an account lands in a compliance review queue.

The mobile apps (iOS and Android) are among the better exchange apps available. Full derivatives order entry, TP/SL management, copy trading, and Earn products all work natively, with widget-style price tracking and biometric login. Advanced charting hands off to TradingView embeds. The web terminal remains the better venue for fast manual trading, and the API (REST + WebSocket) is well documented with generous rate limits at higher tiers.

Who Should Use Bybit

Bybit fits derivatives traders who want deep liquidity, tight spreads, and a serious toolset, and who are comfortable completing KYC on an offshore exchange. It is also a reasonable pick for copy-trading users who want a large pool of lead traders backed by a liquid venue, and for algorithmic traders who need a robust API.

It is a poor fit for US or UK residents (unsupported), privacy-focused users who refuse KYC, and anyone who wants a heavily regulated, insured custodian, which no offshore exchange offers. Long-term holders should treat it as a trading venue, not a vault. If your priority is lower spot fees or looser verification, compare BingX and MEXC in our rankings before deciding.

Crypto derivatives carry a high risk of rapid loss, especially with leverage; never trade with funds you cannot afford to lose, and note that nothing here is financial advice.

Frequently asked questions

Is Bybit safe, or is it a scam?

Bybit is not a scam. It has operated since 2018, processes billions in daily volume, and made every client whole within 72 hours after losing roughly $1.5 billion to North Korea's Lazarus Group in February 2025. A scam exchange does not raise $1.2B+ in bridge loans and OTC buys to cover user balances. It is not licensed in the US or UK, though, so users there have no local regulatory protection.

What are Bybit's fees?

At the base tier as of 2026, Bybit charges 0.10% maker / 0.10% taker on spot and 0.02% maker / 0.055% taker on futures. VIP tiers based on volume or assets cut these significantly, down to zero maker on futures at the top levels. Withdrawal fees vary by coin and network, and note that futures fees apply to full notional, so at 50x leverage a 0.055% taker fee is effectively 2.75% of your margin per entry.

Can I use Bybit without KYC?

No. Bybit removed its no-KYC tier in May 2023. Standard verification (government ID plus selfie) is required for trading and crypto withdrawals, and advanced verification (proof of address) unlocks fiat rails and higher limits. If no-KYC trading matters to you, MEXC or BingX have historically been more permissive; check current policies before depositing.

How long do Bybit withdrawals take, and what are the limits?

Verified Bybit accounts can withdraw up to 1,000,000 USDT-equivalent per day at the standard tier, and 2,000,000 with advanced verification. Crypto withdrawals process after network confirmation once you clear 2FA. Withdrawals that stall beyond that usually indicate a compliance or risk-control review, which is where Bybit's slowest support cases concentrate.

Is Bybit better than OKX?

On derivatives liquidity, Bybit still edges OKX on some major pairs, and its 0.055% futures taker fee is close to OKX's 0.05%. OKX counters with cheaper spot (0.08% maker versus Bybit's 0.10%), a full MiCA license in Europe, and a regulated US re-entry that Bybit has no answer to. For pure perps trading it is nearly a coin flip; for regulatory cover, OKX wins.

What happened in the 2025 Bybit hack?

On February 21, 2025, attackers stole about $1.5 billion in ETH from a Bybit cold-wallet transfer, the largest crypto theft in history. Bybit closed the entire gap within 72 hours using its own capital, bridge loans, and partner support, and client withdrawals were never suspended. Proof-of-reserves audits afterward showed major assets over 100% collateralized.
